Communiqué de focus on the family contre Pékin + 5

Feminism opposed at U.N. Meeting by Pete Winn, online associate editor Pro-family interests are taking a beating at a United Nations women's conférence this week, but advocates for those interests aren't giving up the fight. Delegates gathered at the United Nations (U.N.) in New York City this week for the Beijing+5 conférence, a review of the Fourth World Conference on Women which was held in Beijing, China, in 1995. At Beijing+5, delegates are meeting to review the "pro@ress" nations are making towàrd implementing the radically feminist "Platform for Action" adopted five years ago. Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, of the Beverly LaHaye Institute, is concerned about the aggressive attempt by liberal Western pôwers to rewrite the original Beijing document with controversial recommandations such as strict quotas for women in the workforce. Yet the areas of sexual reproduction and the family are causing the most debate. The Western nations, negotiating as a bloc called JUSCANZ (Japan, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) and working in tandem with the European Union, are trying to add the term "diversity of women" to the document. Though the term is undefined, observés believe it is a veiled reference promoting homosexuality. The nations are reportedly also trying to resurrect the idea of "sexual rights," which was rejected at the original Beijing conférence. According to Mark DeYoung, of the World Life League, the expression encompasses a variety of ideas, ranging from homosexuality to abortion. Yet the West isn't going unopposed. The Group of 77 (G-77) developing nations, for example, is fighting offensive terminology and trying to end the practice of tying population control to humanitarian aid. "For decades, developing nations have been forcéd to accept lfamily planning' in order to receive basic aid -- food and medicine," DeYoung said. Thus far, JUSCANZ has approved language that would merely "discourage" such a practice. Pro-family groups are also lobbying for conservative changes, but Crouse said they are having trouble àccessing panels that deal with controversial language and issues. TAKE ACTION: Pray that the biblical view of sexuality, womanhood and the sanctity of life are upheld at the Beijing+5 conférence, which ends June 9. You can receive family news stories by email.
